Alberto Grimoldi

Honorary professor of Politecnico di Milano

Full Professor of Architectural Restoration at the Politecnico di Milano, he was co-ordinator of the PhD in Conservation of Architectural Heritage from 2001 to 2009; President of the Laurea Programme (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) in Architecture at the Mantova Campus from 2003 to 2010; Director of the Graduate School in Architectural and Landscape Heritage from 2011 to 2019. He has been a visiting professor at the École nationale des chartes, Paris, and at the University of Geneva, where he was on the scientific board of the Diplôme d'Etudes Supérieures en Sauvegarde du Patrimoine bâti.

He is a member of the Governing Board of the Société Francophone d'Histoire de la construction. He was co-founder and Vice President of the Società Italiana per il Restauro Architettonico (SIRA) from 2014 to 2017.

He has been a point of reference for scientific research concerning restoration and the history of construction, continuing the great tradition that has brought the Politecnico di Milano and its Graduate School national and international renown.

The author of over 200 scientific publications on conservation issues, with the LADC (Laboratorio di Analisi e diagnostica del Costruito Laboratory for the Analysis and Diagnostics of the Built Environment) that he directed from 2004 to 2019, he made a significant contribution to research on restoration in Italy, promoting studies in the history of construction and disciplinary interaction with the hard sciences, archaeology and materials engineering, in an international perspective that has given impetus to the renewal of research in this field.

He was also responsible for major architectural restorations such as the Palazzo della Ragione and the Chiesa di San Fedele in Milan, the Cattaneo, Pallavicino and Magio-Grasselli palaces in Cremona, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Basilica of Sant’Andrea in Mantua, and the Arena di Verona.
