Giorgio Guariso

Professor emeritus of Politecnico di Milano

Giorgio Guariso was born in Milan in 1953, where he graduated in Electronic Engineering from Politecnico in 1976. He became a researcher at the Centro Teoria dei Sistemi of the  National Research Council of Italy (Centro Nazionale delle Ricerche - CNR) in 1981, then Associate Professor and Full Professor in Automation at Politecnico di Milano, in 1987 and 1994 respectively.
He was Guest Research Scholar at the IIASA in Laxemburg (A) and Guest Professor at the University of Vienna and Tongji University in Shanghai.

The author of over 200 scientific papers, Giorgio Guariso was a member of the Scientific Committee of the 'Lombardia per l'Ambiente' Foundation, chairman of the IFIP Working Group 5.11 'Computers and Environment', chairman of the 'International Environmental Modelling and Software Society' IEMSS, deputy chairman of TC 8.3 IFAC.

He was president of the Teaching Coordination Committee for the programme ‘Automation and Control Engineering’ (Como Campus), president of the Study Programme Board for the programme ‘Civil and Environmental Engineering’, coordinator of the Study Programme Board for the programme ‘Environmental and Geomatic Engineering’ (Como Campus).

Throughout his career at Politecnico di Milano, Giorgio Guariso has been constantly involved in the University's various policy and governing bodies, holding important institutional positions. He was a member of Politecnico's Board of Governors from 2009 to 2012 and a member of the Academic Senate as faculty representative from 2017 to 2022. He was a candidate for the position of Dean of the School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering for the four-year period 2011-2014 and for the position of Rector for the six-year period 2017-2022.
