Innovative technologies for Space

The collaboration between the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Politecnico di Milano is part of a strategy to direct scientific research in the sector towards the applications needed for the development of activities in space, both in the context of robotic and human exploration, and in the field of Earth observation. The scientific project is due to last for 15 years, and provides a stable and long-term multidisciplinary partnership aimed at sharing technology and creating research posts that are focused on developing new technologies for space.

4 macro-areas of collaboration

01

Cutting-edge technologies for the design, development and testing of robotics; guidance, navigation and control systems, and next-generation miniature satellites to help future space missions explore and observe the universe.

02

Smart Materials for the development of advanced structures capable of monitoring their own health status, modifying their shape, and self-repairing. Intelligent structures that autonomously adapt to the extreme environments of space.

03

Additive Manufacturing and 3D Bioprinting for Space, and in Space. Smart, sustainable processes for creating metal, ceramic or multi-material products; 3D printing and 3D bioprinting in Space to support a human presence.

04

High-performance methods for mathematical modelling, numerical simulation and statistical analysis, to assist satellite monitoring of Italian territory and help prevent natural disasters such as landslides and volcanic eruptions.
